NamibRand Nature Reserve

DAY 1 - 4

Spanning an area of 172,200 hectares and encompassing four distinct ecosystems, the NamibRand Reserve of southern Namibia is among the largest privately owned game parks in Southern Africa. Founded to conserve the unique environment and wildlife species of the Namib Desert, the park’s mix of dunes, mountains, rocky outcrops, sandy flats, and gravel plains provides habitats for a diversity of mammals, including hyenas, jackals, foxes, antelopes, and various wild cats.

A plethora of bird species, reptiles, insects, and frogs also have their home here, alongside an array of plant species. Discover the mysterious ‘fairy circles’, unexplained bare patches in the sand, or enjoy a night of sublime stargazing – having been named Africa’s first International Dark Sky Reserve, it is one of the least light-polluted areas in the world.

Day 1

andBeyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

After landing at Windhoek’s Hosea Kutako International Airport, you will clear customs and immigration and be met by an Anne Luxury Travel representative. They will brief you on your safari and assist with your check-in for the flight to Sossusvlei Desert Lodge Airstrip.

Upon arrival at the airstrip, a Sossusvlei Desert Lodge representative will transfer you to the lodge. The afternoon can be spent relaxing at the lodge or participating in scheduled activities, such as eco quad biking in the dunes of the NamibRand Nature Reserve.

NamibRand Nature Reserve, one of Southern Africa’s largest private reserves, spans over 180,000 hectares of the Namib Desert. It features diverse desert landscapes, including sand and gravel plains, grass savannahs, mountain ranges, and vegetated dune belts. Originally sheep farms, the reserve now hosts a flourishing array of indigenous flora and fauna.

Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, located in the northern foothills of NamibRand, offers a luxurious stay with glass and stone structures that open to stunning views. Each suite has a shaded deck, split-level bedroom and living room with a fireplace, en-suite glass-encased bathroom, and outdoor shower. Highlights include star gazing with a skylight and observatory, and guided activities like 4×4 nature drives, walks, and quad-biking excursions.

Day 2

On Day 2, you’ll start early for a stunning photographic excursion into Namib Naukluft National Park with your lodge guide. You’ll capture the dunes at sunrise, where soft light and shadows highlight their towering shapes. The guide will explain the formation of the Namib Desert and its unique flora and fauna.

After exploring the dunes, enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of a camel thorn tree, arranged by Sossusvlei Desert Lodge. On the way back to the lodge, you can visit Sesriem Canyon if you haven’t already. The afternoon is at your leisure, with the option to participate in additional lodge activities.

Sossusvlei is known for its towering apricot-colored dunes and clay pan, surrounded by some of the tallest dunes on earth. The ephemeral Tsauchab River ends here, creating striking contrasts in the landscape. Deadvlei, nearby, is famous for its ancient, dead camel thorn trees.

Sesriem Canyon, formed by erosion from the Tsauchab River, is a 1.5 km long and 30 meters deep gorge. It holds pools of water during the rainy season, which early settlers used, giving the canyon its name.

Day 3

On Day 3, you’ll embark on a shared helicopter flight over the Namib Desert, an additional activity available for those staying three nights at Sossusvlei Desert Lodge. This flight is weather-dependent and may be canceled due to adverse conditions. After returning to the lodge, you’ll have leisure time and the option to join another shared activity arranged by the lodge management.
