Destination

Sossusvlei

DAY 1 - 4

Located in the scenic Namib-Naukluft National Park, Sossusvlei is where you will find the iconic red sand dunes of the Namib. The clear blue skies contrast with the giant red dunes to make this one of the most scenic natural wonders of Africa and a photographer’s heaven. This awe-inspiring destination is possibly Namibia’s premier attraction, with its unique dunes rising to almost 400 metres – making them some of the highest in the world.

These iconic dunes come alive in morning and evening light and draw photography enthusiasts from around the globe. Sossusvlei is home to a variety of desert wildlife including oryx, springbok, ostrich and a variety of reptiles. Visitors can climb ‘Big Daddy’, one of Sossusvlei’s tallest dunes; explore Deadvlei, a white, salt, claypan dotted with ancient trees; or for the more extravagant, scenic flights and hot air ballooning are on offer, followed by a once-in-a-lifetime champagne breakfast amidst these majestic dunes.

Day 2

Today promises a day full of stunning photographic opportunities. You’ll start early with a magical excursion into the Namib Naukluft National Park, guided by your lodge base guide. You’ll capture the towering sand dunes at sunrise when the light is soft and shadows accentuate their shapes. Your guide will explain the formation of the Namib Desert and its unique flora and fauna.

After exploring the dunes, you’ll enjoy a picnic lunch in the shade of a camel thorn tree, prepared by Hoodia Desert Lodge. On your way back to the lodge, you’ll have the chance to visit Sesriem Canyon, if you haven’t already. The rest of the afternoon is free for leisure or optional activities offered by the lodge.

Sossusvlei, the most visited section of the park, is known for its towering apricot-colored dunes and clay pan set amidst these dunes. The Tsauchab River valley leads to Sossusvlei, which is surrounded by some of the tallest dunes on earth. The ephemeral river occasionally floods the pan, creating striking reflections. Nearby, Deadvlei is famous for its ghostly camel thorn trees, dead for about 900 years.

Sesriem Canyon, formed by centuries of erosion by the Tsauchab River, is a 1.5 km long and 30 meters deep gorge with sediment layers from millions of years. It retains pools of water during the rainy season, which early settlers used for their livestock, giving the canyon its name.
